Extension Disabled After Browser Update

Separate browser-level disabling, permission changes, and version incompatibility, then restore the extension safely in MaskPilot.

Updated Aug 24, 2026

After a browser update, an extension may disappear, become disabled, or fail to load. First identify whether the message comes from the browser or MaskPilot. Do not begin by downgrading the browser, editing the package, or repeatedly reinstalling it.

Identify what blocked the extension

  • MaskPilot reports an incompatible version: The extension version is outside the supported range for the browser version selected by this profile.
  • The browser asks you to approve new permissions: An update may add website access or browser capabilities. A new permission that triggers a warning can temporarily disable the extension until you approve it.
  • The browser says the extension is no longer supported: The developer usually needs to provide a version that meets the current extension-platform requirements. This is not a reason to bypass the browser restriction.
  • The extension is missing from only one profile: It may not be selected for that profile, or the profile may not have been fully relaunched after the change.
  • A local extension is missing on another device: Local extensions and their profile assignments remain on the device where they were imported and do not sync.

Restore it according to the message

  1. Save your work and fully close the affected browser profile.
  2. In MaskPilot, confirm that the extension is still installed and selected for the target profile.
  3. Compare the extension version with the profile’s browser version. If MaskPilot reports an incompatibility, choose a compatible extension version or change the browser version when the workflow allows it.
  4. If the browser requests new permissions, review the access scope. Approve it only when the source is trusted and the permissions match the extension’s purpose.
  5. If a legacy extension format is no longer supported, install a Manifest V3 release from the developer or choose a trusted alternative. MaskPilot accepts only Manifest V3 folders or ZIP packages for local import.
  6. Relaunch the profile and verify the extension icon, permissions, and primary workflow on the target website.

When updating a local extension

Changing the original folder does not replace the local copy already reviewed by MaskPilot. Import the new release again, review its name, version, site access, and browser capabilities, then validate it in a test profile.

Do not edit manifest.json to fake compatibility or rely on temporary launch flags to restore a format the browser has retired. Those workarounds remove the reliable basis for permissions, updates, and troubleshooting.

If it still does not load

Enable only this extension in a test profile. If it still fails, record the browser version, extension version, original message, and approximate time without including account credentials in screenshots or logs. If the same extension fails on a compatible version, contact the extension developer or MaskPilot support.
