Fix a Failed or Corrupted Extension Install

Separate download, package verification, old installation data, and browser compatibility problems, then safely clear and redownload an extension in MaskPilot.

Updated Sep 3, 2026

After a store extension is installed and assigned to a browser profile, MaskPilot prepares the required extension files when that profile launches. A download, file-verification, extraction, or package-structure problem can stop the profile with an extension installation error. Preserve the message and identify the failing stage before deleting a browser profile or editing extension files.

Identify the type of failure first

The browser marks the extension as corruptedRepair the store extension’s local installation first, then check browser-version compatibility

Clear old store-extension installation files

  1. Save your work and close every browser profile currently using the extension normally.
  2. Open Extensions in MaskPilot and select the affected store extension.
  3. Expand “Installation problem?” and select “Clear old installation files.”
  4. After the cleanup finishes, launch a test profile assigned to the extension. The required files download automatically during launch.
  5. Confirm that the profile starts, then check the extension icon, target-site access, and primary workflow.

Clearing old installation files removes only the store extension’s local copy on the current device. It does not uninstall the extension or change its browser-profile assignments. Do not delete files manually from the client data directory, because that can remove another version or damage content still in use.

See install and manage browser extensions for the normal installation and assignment flow.

If the redownload still fails

Change one condition at a time, then relaunch the same test profile:

  1. Download failure: Confirm that the current device has a stable connection, retry later, and check whether a corporate network, security tool, or content filter blocks the download.
  2. Verification or extraction failure: Clear the old installation files once more and retry. If the problem continues, do not bypass verification or use an untrusted copy. Record the extension name, version, and failing stage for support.
  3. No valid extension configuration: The current store package may be incomplete. Do not assemble package files manually; keep the extension name and version for support to verify.
  4. Disk write failure: Confirm that the device has enough free space and that security software is not preventing MaskPilot from saving application files.

Google’s download-error guidance likewise recommends checking the network, retrying later, and looking for security software that blocks a download. Use that only to assess the device environment; perform the MaskPilot repair from the extension detail page.

A redownload cannot fix incompatibility

If the page explicitly reports that the extension version is incompatible with the current browser version, clearing files does not change the supported version range. Select a compatible extension version, or change the browser version only when the workflow permits it, then validate the combination in a test profile. Do not edit extension files to fake compatibility.

Chrome’s extension-management guidance treats download or installation problems, corrupted extensions, and version compatibility as separate failures. Keep those stages separate during diagnosis as well.

What to record before contacting support

Record the extension name and version, browser version, exact error message, whether the failure occurs during download or profile launch, when old installation files were cleared, and whether other extensions prepare normally on the same device. Do not send account passwords, website cookies, proxy credentials, or unredacted screenshots of business pages.
