Why Did the Web Audio Fingerprint Change?
Learn why Web Audio fingerprint results can change, how MaskPilot keeps one profile stable, and how to verify the same browser environment safely.
Updated Sep 29, 2026A diagnostic page may report that the Web Audio fingerprint changed even though no microphone was used and no sound was played. The result usually comes from browser-side audio calculations, not from recording the room. Before changing the profile, compare the same profile, browser version, test page, and test method.
Understand what the page is measuring
Audio fingerprint tests commonly create an OfflineAudioContext, connect several processing nodes, render the graph into an AudioBuffer, and summarize part of that output. Unlike a normal AudioContext, an offline context generates the buffer without sending audio to the device’s speakers.
The displayed hash is not a standardized browser value. Each diagnostic page can choose its own graph, sample range, rounding, and hash function. A page update can therefore change the displayed result even when the profile did not change. Browser and operating-system audio implementations can also affect the calculation.
Record the raw result and test conditions instead of relying only on labels such as “unique,” “random,” or “modified.” Those labels are interpretations made by the page.
Read MaskPilot’s audio protection correctly
MaskPilot provides Audio information in the profile’s fingerprint settings. It is enabled by default so websites do not receive the unprotected audio calculation surface directly.
MaskPilot stores one environment identity for each profile. The browser derives a separate Web Audio value from that identity:
- the same profile keeps its environment identity across launches;
- Web Audio, canvas, and font protection use separate derived domains instead of sharing one component value; and
- a copied or received profile receives a new identity rather than reusing the source profile’s identity.
This boundary is designed to keep one profile repeatable while keeping different profiles separate. It does not promise that unrelated diagnostic pages will calculate the same hash, or that a browser-version update will preserve a third-party page’s previous label.
Verify the same environment after a full restart
- Record the profile name, browser version, page address, test time, and complete audio result.
- Repeat the test once without editing or reloading through a different URL.
- Fully close the profile and wait until its status becomes available.
- Edit the same profile and find Audio information in the fingerprint settings.
- If a change is necessary, adjust only that setting. Do not change the persona mode, browser version, screen, GPU, and proxy at the same time.
- Save, relaunch the same profile, and test the same HTTPS page twice.
Fingerprint settings are loaded when the browser process starts. If the page still shows the previous result after a complete relaunch, follow why profile settings did not apply before changing another field.
Separate Web Audio from microphones and speakers
An offline audio calculation does not require microphone permission and does not prove that a website recorded sound. Camera, microphone, and speaker enumeration belongs to a different browser surface. If the problem is an unexpected device list or a failed permission prompt, use the media device list checklist instead.
Audio playback problems are also separate. A silent media player can result from site autoplay policy, the selected output device, operating-system volume, or application settings. Changing an audio fingerprint option is not a general playback repair.
Do not grant microphone access merely to make an offline fingerprint test complete. Grant permissions only when the intended website workflow needs them.
Know when to investigate further
No correction is normally required when the same profile returns a repeatable result on the same page and the only difference is against another profile, another browser version, or another diagnostic method.
Investigate further when the result changes between full restarts without a profile edit, when the profile was copied or restored without that distinction being recorded, or when a browser update coincides with the change. Change one variable at a time and keep the original evidence.
For related but separate surfaces, use the canvas fingerprint checklist or WebGL GPU checklist. For the wider lifecycle, see configure a stable browser fingerprint.
MDN explains that OfflineAudioContext renders an audio-processing graph into an AudioBuffer without playing it through the device. Its Web Audio API guide documents the browser audio graph, nodes, and processing model.
